For as long as we can remember, Jamaican Black Rum Cake has always been a part of our household. Specifically, our grandmother's recipe and her version of this delectable delight was always the highlight of our many trips to visit her in Jamaica. Our fondest memories include all of us sitting at her dining table for "supper" with a cup of tea and a generous slice of her famous cake.
The history of Jamaican Black Rum Cake can be traced back to the influence of the British in the West Indies, and its relationship to the Christmas plum pudding and the figgy pudding brought to the Caribbean during colonialism. British Christmas pudding was seen as a symbol of British Imperialism as all its ingredients were sourced from across the British Empire. For example, spice came from India, currants came from Australia and rum and sugar came from the British West Indies. Over the years, Caribbean descendants of enslaved Africans incorporated their own traditional elements to eventually create their own versions of this unique confection.
Typically enjoyed over the Christmas holiday, making Jamaican Black Rum Cake is truly a labor of love. Our cakes are diligently made with authentic Jamaican spices, fruits, port wine, and overproof Jamaican rum. We honored our family's recipe for you to have a chance to enjoy this delight year round.
